Minutes, correspondence and other documentation relating to the role of H. Ariander Hughes as secretary of the 1891 Gwynedd Eisteddfod and to the 1898 National Eisteddfod.

Committee minutes of the General Assembly of Calvinist Methodists, 1879 and the Quarterly Meetings, 1898 held in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Account book of the C. M.'s of the Blaenau Ffestiniog District, 1885-1892.

Notes on sermons held at an C. M. Chapel in Ffestiniog, 1899 and at the Maenofferen chapel in 1902 by J. T. Williams. Also includes a few transcripts of parish registers of the Llyn area.

Minutes of the governors of the Advanced Elementary School in Ffestiniog, 1883-1894.

Minutes of the Ffestiniog Intermediate School Committee, 1889-1896 with details of the successful attempt to acquire a new county school for the area with list of subscribers.

Minutes relating to the National Memorial for Thomas Edward Ellis, M. P., 1899-1900.

Letters addressed to H. Arianader Hughes from such correspondents as Alafon, Dyfed, David Jenkins, Sir Henry Lewis, Myrddin Fardd, W.J. Parry, Iolo Caernarfon, Gwilym Cowlyd and Llew Llwyfo. The matters discussed are varied and reflect the generous nature of H. Ariander Hughes who was evidently supportive of the erection of memorials for Daniel Owen and Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, 1895-1915.

Administrative / Biographical History

H. Ariander Hughes of Llanberis was a member of the family of Gellidara, near Pwllheli, North Wales. He was related to H. Tudwal Davies and to the crowned bard, Emyr.

He was a banker by profession, working at the Metropolitan Bank in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merioneth. He also took on the role of secretary in the 1891 Gwynedd Eisteddfod and the 1898 National Eisteddfod held in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

He was a generous, wise and well-respected gentleman and one of the first deacons of the Maenofferen C.M. Chapel in Blaenau Ffestiniog. He died in 1928.
