Fronwnion Papers

Material relates to the development of the Fronwnion estate, Dolgellau, by Lewis Williams. The majority of papers relate to the old Clogwynau common, its allotment to new proprietors under the Inclosure acts and the purchase by Lewis Williams of several of these lots from the new proprietors. It consists of releases, including two by the Commissioner for executing the powers of the Dolgellau Inclosure Act, purchase deeds and conveyances.

Lewis Williams was a businessman and owner of the Fronwnion estate, Dolgellau in Merioneth. He successfully developed the banking business of Thomas Jones of Ynysfaig, which he had acquired through marriage. Later he became sole proprietor of Yr Hen Fanc and after taking his sons into partnership the company became Williams & Sons. As he built up the Fronwnion estate Lewis Williams persuaded the new owners of the old Clogwynau common land which had become available under the Inclosure acts, to sell their lots to him.

Material is arranged in chronological order and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
