Dolwyddelan Rate Books

Scope and Content

Lists of assessments for highway rates made 1 May 1876 and 8 June 1877, giving details of the holders of lands, tenants of cottages with estimated rentals and rateable value.

Administrative / Biographical History

The parish of Dolwyddelan was a civil as well as an ecclesiastical administrative unit. In common with other parishes it was a major instrument of local government with responsibility for poor relief, highways and law and order, which continued until reforms in the late nineteenth century. Rate books were compiled to record details of the rate paying inhabitants of a particular area. This collection relates to property holders in the parish of Dolwyddelan in Caernarfonshire, now known as the county unit of Gwynedd. In the late nineteenth century the dominant landowner in the parish was the Gwydir family, represented by Clementina Elizabeth, Baroness Willoughby D'Eresby (d. 1888).
