Poetry of Rev. David Lewis (Ap Ceredigion)

Scope and Content

This collection of poetry composed by Rev. David Lewis consists of some works which were entered in Eisteddfod competitions as well as some translations from Breton, Latin and English into Welsh. Also included are hymns, translated from Greek and Latin into Welsh and from Welsh to English. The scrapbooks contain cuttings from Y Llan and Y Cyfaill Eglwysig which include the poetical works of John J. Hughes of Llan-non, also known as Glan Peris. There are also rough drafts of poems and hymns and copies of the works of other poets e.g. Daniel Jones of Llanddewi Aber-arth, Cardiganshire, Rev. David Lewis (Glan Llethi) of Llansanffraid, Cardiganshire and others.

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev. David Lewis, rector of Llansadwrn parish, Anglesey and poet was a native of Llan-non, Cardiganshire. He was known by his bardic name Ap Ceredigion and his work was published in the periodicals, Cymru Coch, Y Cyfaill Eglwysig, Yr Haul and Perl y Plant. He was also responsible for the poetry column in Y Llan. He was born in 1870 and died in 1948.

Arrangement

The papers have been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts and arranged according to record type and then chronologically.
