LETTER: Ja. Williams to C. Bicknell, vice chairman of the Bangor and Beaumaris Board of Guardians in which he angrily answers the charges made against him in connection with the administration of the Penmynydd almshouse. Firstly he agrees that the men are not paid regularly but that is not his fault as the pension from which the money comes is irregularly paid to him. He encloses a statement to prove this covering the years 1838-1848. He points out that the money remains in his hands no longer than 3 days. Secondly he does not agree that the state of repair of the almshouse is bad and points out that the Statutes direct that each almsman shall keep his room in repair subject to a deduction from his pension. As this was considered a hardship to the pensioners it had not been enforced and repairs had been paid for out of general funds financed partly y subscriptions and partly by sums which accrued during the vacancy of a chamber. The trustees wanted to have better windows which would allow for ventilation to be put in but there was no money for this. Thirdly he denies that chambers have been left vacant for two years, the present vacancy being caused by the fact there was no suitable candidate. Further he points out that under the Founder's will he was entitled to £2 per year for managing the charity which therefore owed him £60. He has never claimed this.
