LETTER: Surgeon Rear Admiral R. Alun Roberts, Royal Naval Hospital, Gosport, Hants to Mr Madoc Jones. He gives an account of his activities since they last met. He was called up to the Royal Navy in September 1939 and he has been in Haslar Royal Naval Hospital, the largest in the country, ever since. He will be sending a photograph of himself in uniform very soon to Mr & Mrs Madoc Jones. He is kept very busy between usual medical conditions and the casualties of war. He has been receiving news of the Madoc Jones family from his cousin Ada and hopes the war isn't causing them too much anxiety. He has met many middle aged men from distant parts of the Empire who have had to leave their families to fight for the freedom of the world, and he deems it the greatest honour to be of service to them. He describes how, at the time of writing, the German planes are heard overhead, and they have had their fourth air raid since the afternoon. He has not been to Beaumaris for a while. He was President of the Anglesey Agricultural Society in August 1939, and met Sir Richard Williams Bulkeley. His mind went back to when he was pupil at Beaumaris school 1899 - 1903. He discusses the bombing which has taken place and the building that have been destroyed. All he has written about his work is strictly confidential and not for publication. The Royal Navy is the senior and silent service. He would like to hear from Mr Madoc Jones and get his views about the war and its complications.
