Scope and Content

COPY LETTER: J. W. Clarke, 69 Priory Farm Road, Hatfield Peverel, Chelmsford, Essex to Mr Haley acknowledging receipt of his letters and returned permanent pass. Letters passing through London are delayed because of trouble with the postal people there. They were with R. S. M. Shipperlee, and were at the Kingsbridge camp in 1918. He was pleased to know that he is still about and discusses their affection for him and the conditions under which they served. The miners who came later were from the Searchlights an[d] Newcastle Tynesiders (Georgies). Several of them were moved to a hut when flu was bad and several died. After training they were marched to Bangor station en route for Christchurch, Dorset to erect Tubular bridging thrown across the river by tanks. They never got to that as the Germans surrended. He discusses demobbing, and the fact that their Company were a credit to the Camp. He has no more information as over 60 years have passed since then.

Postcript that there was a "wet" canteen at the camp, which was not used much.
