Administrative / Biographical History
Magor and St Mellons Rural District Council (RDC), Monmouthshire, was created on 1 April 1935 from Magor RDC and St Mellons RDC and comprised the parishes of Betws, Bishton, Coedcernyw, Dyffryn, Goldcliff, Graig, Henllys, Kemeys Inferior, Langstone, Llandevenny, Llanmartin, Llan-wern, Llanvaches, Machen Lower, Magor, Marshfields, Michaelston-y-fedw, Nash, Penhow, Peterstone Wentlloog, Rogerstone, St Bride's Wentlloog, St Mellons, Redwick, Whitson and Wilcrick. The Council comprised a number of councillors and a chairman. Its responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, maintaining local roads, cemeteries and parks, licensing of public entertainments, water supply and housing. RDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector. Magor and St Mellons RDC was abolished in 1974.
