Records of Newport Board of Health and Port Sanitary Authority, 1850-1885.

Newport Local Board of Health came into existence in 1850 when the Public Health Act 1848 was adopted by Newport Borough Council. It took over the responsibilities of the Newport Improvement Commissioners, including lighting, paving, water and regulating the police, and also became responsible for street cleaning, sewerage and highways. The Board was constituted as a committee of Newport Borough Council, with the whole of the Council as members. The Public Health Act 1872 authorised the designation of Newport Board of Health as a Port Sanitary Authority which, in addition to the usual public health role of sanitary authorities, was responsible for sanitation on board ships entering the port and the prevention of non-quarantine diseases.
