Administrative / Biographical History

D Ivor Davies was the Campaign Committee Secretary of The Campaign against German Troops and Bases in Wales up until 1964 when he had to relinquish the secretaryship due to ill health. He was also the Secretary of the Glamorgan Federation Trades Councils.

The Campaign against German Troops and Bases in Wales grew out of deep concerns about the training of German troops in Wales during the early 1960s. The campaign emphasised that it was not the ordinary German people themselves they objected to but the threat of the revival of German militarism. It was made clear that German civilians visiting Wales or working alongside the Welsh in the coal-mines would always be made welcome. Thecampaign organised significant demonstrations and peace marches against the German troops at the Castlemartin Tank Range, Pembroke, as well as in Pembroke Dock, Swansea and Cardiff.

The President of the campaign in 1962 was S O Davies, MP for Merthyr. The National Union of Mineworkers (South Wales Area) Executive Committee donated money to the campaign.
