Administrative / Biographical History

Glyncorrwg Urban District Council (UDC) was created in 1894, covering the same area as the newly enlarged parish of Glyncorrwg, Glamorgan. The Council initially took over the powers of Glyncorrwg Local Board of Health. Its responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor, Rating Officer and Sanitary Inspector. Following local government reorganisation Glyncorrwg UDC was joined with Port Talbot Borough in 1974 to create the Borough of Afan (renamed Port Talbot in 1986).
