Ainsworth Collection

The Ainsworth family of Harland Ainsworth and his wife Alice settled in Swansea, Glamorgan c.1800. They married in 1783 in St. Martins in the Fields, London and had 15 children together. The family moved from London to Brecon then Hay before finally settling in Swansea. The papers are primarily concerned with the legal case at Chancery between Ainsworth family members. The Chancery case appears to have been handled by James and Collins solicitors (RISW JC). Harland Ainsworth was associated with Martha Whitney as he appears as one of the witnesses to her will (RISW W 16).

The collection was originally catalogued at University College Library, Swansea, where an interpretation of the original order was made. This catalogue lists the items chronologically under the headings stated in Scope and content.

The records were originally held at The Royal Institution of South Wales, Swansea. From 1966 onwards the records were moved to the library in the University College, Swansea in consignments. They were transferred to West Glamorgan Archive Service in the Spring of 2004 as part of The Royal Institution of South Wales Collection.
