Bert Sutcliffe was born in Neath in 1889.He became a manual worker at Neath Steel Sheet & Galvanising Works in 1905.Between 1910 and 1917 he was on the National Executive of the Associated Iron & Steel Workers of Great Britain, involved in the amalgamation with the British Steel Smelters and the formation of the Iron & Steel Trades Confederation in 1917.In 1938 he was one of the three employee members of the Sheet Trade Board Delegation to the United States to investigate developments in sheet steel rolling. He was a representative of the Sheet Trade Board from 1910 to 1942.When ill health forced him to give up manual work and he was given a clerical job, later becoming manager of the Sheet Mill Department until his retirement in 1957 after 52 years’ service at Neath Steel Sheet & Galvanising. He was on the Board of the Neath Forward Movement Mission Hall, of which his mother was a founder member, and taught a Men's Sunday School Class there. Bert Sutcliffe was one of the founder members of Neath Rugby Supporters Club after the First World War, and was on Neath R.F.C. Committee. He was a Life Member & Trustee of the Club. In addition to these activities he was a Neath Borough Councillor for 8 years, retiring owing to ill health in May 1953.He married May Hancock of Neath in 1914 and had six children. Bert Sutcliffe died in 1969 and May Sutcliffe died in 1970.
