Lease (counterpart), for 21 years, for £157 10s, rent one peppercorn, 4s for every weigh (and so proportionably for lesser quantity than weigh) of coal that shall be wrought, raised, landed, sold or disposed of in and from new vein, 4d for every weigh (and so proportionably for lesser quantity than weigh) of coal that shall be wrought and landed in and from vein called Great Vein alias Hill Vein, two carriers bags or sacks from each of veins weekly to (i), his heirs or assigns, 1 Aug 1730; (i) Franklin Matthews of parish of Llangyfelach, gentleman, to (ii) James Griffitts of town of Swansea, merchant: Two veins, mines and seams of coal and coal works of (i) called Great Vein alias Hill Vein and New Vein or by what other name or names whatsoever same are or either of them is called, lying under lands of (i) at penclawth (Penclawdd) within parish of Llanrhidian on part of which said lands or near (ii) hath lately at his own expense put and fixed engine for draining of water that shall or may be prejudicial to work, with full and free liberty, power and authority to and for (ii), his executors, administrators and assigns and his and their agents, servants, workmen and labourers to dig, work and land coal from veins aforesaid, from pit wherein said engine is now settled on Great Vein and pit lately sunk on New Vein to well or water there called Funnonworgan and also to dig, work and land coal from New Vein from well called Funnonworgan as far forth to eastward as lands of (i) called Penylan now in tenure of William Griffith, doth extend
