The Mathias family had resided in Llangwarren, Jordanston, Pembrokeshire, since the 16th century, when Thomas Mathias (c. 1570-1617) of Glastir, Nevern, Pembrokeshire, married Jane Lloyd, co-heiress of Llangwarren. The estate descended in the male line, passing to Charles Delamotte Mathias (1777-1851), who married Mary Bethell, of Hassage, Somerset. Charles Mathias purchased Lamphey Court, Lamphey, Pembrokeshire, in 1810-1811, and built a new mansion there in 1823. Their children were Lewis Mathias (1813-1882) who married Emily Catherine Lawes (d. 1877) of Harpenden, Hertfordshire; the Rev. William Mathais (1816- 1864) of Pencoed, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, who married Eliza Stradling, of Bridgwater, Somerset; Charles Mathias (1817-1888); George Mathias (1819-1840), of Glastonbury, Somerst, who married Caroline Law, of Staple Grove Lodge, Somerset; Henry Mathias (b. 1820) of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, a solicitor with the firm Evans, Powell and Mathias, who married Charlotte Maria Carleton Lloyd; Edward Mathias (b. 1822); James Mathias (1823-1886), of Croston [?Lancashire], whose second wife was Alyne Louisa Eliza Hulton (d. 1923); Alfred Mathias (b. 1825); Thomas Mathias (b. 1827) of Haverfordwest, and Frederick Mathias (b. 1828). His eldest son, Charles (1849-1918), married Cecilia Antonia Stokes (d. 1935), of St Botolphs, Pembrokeshire. Their eldest son, Charles Ronald Mathias (1877-1949), married Shelagh Natalie Farewell, of Natal, South Africa, and they had a son, Wing Commander Lewis Mathias of Lamphey (b. 1915). He had a daughter, Shelah Nicole (b. 1948), by his second wife, Huguette Ida Lèvy, of France. Lewis Mathias was the last of the family to live in Lamphey Court. The family advertised Llangwarren for sale in 1987, and Lamphey Court in 1978. The 2nd son of Charles and Cecilia was Algernon Stokes Mathias (1885-1923), of Llangwarren, a Captain in the Royal Veterinary Corps. He married Winifred Gertrude Bonsall, of Theale. The 3rd son, Egerton Lloyd Anthony Mathias (b. 1890), of Marconi House, was an electrical engineer. He sold Upper House, Wolfsdale, Camrose, Pembrokshire, in 1919-1920. Grace Mathias (d. 1834) was one of the daughters of David Mathias (1738-1812), a shopkeeper of Fishguard, Pembrokeshire. She inherited various estates in Fishguard from her aunt, also called Grace Mathias, (d. 1788).
