Administrative / Biographical History

The Welsh Ecumenical Society developed out of 'Urdd y Deyrnas' and was founded in 1954 to promote the Ecumenical Movement in Wales. The Society played a part in the development in Wales of what became known as Christian Aid. This UK movement and the call for it developed out of the need to give aid to the refugees of World War II and in 1949 the Inter-Church Aid and Refugee Service was formed. A major step forward in the co-operation needed for such a venture was the first Christian Aid week in 1957.
