MADAME DOUGLAS-ADAMS MSS

Records of Mary Maude Douglas-Adams (1856-1904), an opera singer, teacher of music and producer of operatic concerts. Includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper cuttings and programmes for operatic concerts.

Mary Maude Douglas-Adams (1856-1904) was the daughter of John Manley Esq., an actor and opera singer of some note, whose ambition it was that his daughter should follow in his footsteps. She was accordingly trained as an opera singer and very early showed great promise. She appeared in leading roles with several famous companies but retired from the professional stage in 1880, having settled in Mold with her husband, Mr W.J. Douglas. Her talents were thereafter employed with great success as a teacher of music, and in producing operatic concerts. She became an extremely popular and well-loved figure in Mold and after the death of her first husband she married a local auctioneer, Mr T.S. Adams, who was also widely respected as an energetic urban district councillor and freemason. Her death in 1904 at the age of forty-eight was mourned throughout the district and was widely reported in the press. Although not Welsh-speaking, she was a member of the Gorsedd and was given the bardic title of 'Perores Gwalia Pencerddes'.
