Scope and Content

Records and papers relating mainly to Flint, 1610-1974, including records and papers relating to the Borough of Flint and Flint Borough Council, [1890s]-1974; records relating to Flint Public Library, 1903-1964, and Flint Borough Library, 1948-1974; records relating to Courtaulds Aber Works, Flint, 1902-1973; copies of newspapers, 1918-1949; and plans and maps relating to Flint and Flintshire, 1908-1973.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Borough of Flint, Flintshire, was granted its first Royal Charter in 1284. In the 1880s it became a Borough Council; it was abolished under local government reorganisation in 1974. Flint Public Library opened in 1903; a new Borough Library was opened in 1966. The Library accumulated records of the Borough and other material relating to the area, including records of Courtaulds' Aber Works, in Flint, which produced synthetic fibres for the textile industry.
