Administrative / Biographical History
Sir Walter Spencer Stanhope was the son of John Spencer Stanhope of Cannon Hall, Barnsley, and Lady Elizabeth Wilhelmina, daughter of the Earl of Leicester. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, obtaining a first in mathematics in 1847, (M.A. 1851). From 1847 to 1872 he served as a captain in the West Yorkshire Yeomanry. After two unsuccessful attempts at contesting the West Riding Southern Division of Yorkshire, he was elected as a Conservative MP in 1872, but was then defeated in 1880. He was knighted in 1904.
