Scope and Content

Comprises the typescript draft of Bennett's introduction for the Faber version of the dramatisation of Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows', produced at the National Theatre in December 1991. The draft contains many revisions of the text in autograph manuscript. On the first folio, in red ink, Bennett has added a caricature of his head and face.

Many sections of text are sellotaped or otherwise attached to larger pieces of paper.

Administrative / Biographical History

Alan Bennett, the actor and writer, was born in Leeds in 1934 and educated at Leeds Modern School and Exeter College, Oxford. He made his stage debut at the Edinburgh Festival in 1959, and in 1960 wrote and appeared in the acclaimed comedy revue 'Beyond the Fringe'. Since 1968 he has worked as a writer, actor, director, and broadcaster for the stage, television, radio, and films, for which he has won many awards.
