Building and Garden

Scope and Content

Ysgol Rowen School Garden Project commenced in 1999 when a number of interested parents and staff at the school felt there was potential in developing an educational resource and additional play area on land owned by the school, which was derelict.

The school garden became part of the school curriculum, and designs were produced in conjunction with the children, together with physical work to the area itself.

Saturday morning clearance parties were arranged where parents, staff and pupils joined forces and tackled weeding, digging and pruning - even eradicating an old Japanese Knotwood.

Support for the garden came from both within and outside the village of Rowen, including donations from the Rowen Carnival Committee and the village W.I.; grant aid and physical help from the Snowdonia National Park Authority; donations from Tesco, National Power, British Aluminium and Conwy Valley Nurseries; school trips to local plant nurseries; creation of steps and walls by parents; donations of materials by village gardeners; and physical help and advice from the Rowen Gardening Society.

The project helped the school children and the village in a number of ways, for example by providing a focal point of acitivity and by bringing together diverse age groups.
