Incipit of letter: 'I have presumed to send a Letter to the author of the Reasons unknown to be left with the bookseller'. Explicit of letter: 'concluding with ye Oblation which shoud follow immediately after the words of Institution'.
Extract of a letter from Mr. Johnson of Cranbrook to Dr. Brett dated 'February ye 17 1717 wch. I copied from the original'. The transcript is in the hand of Thomas Bowdler (1661-1738) and should probably be dated to about 1718, the date of the work in which it is written.
Summary: Mr. Johnson of Cranbrook [i.e. John Johnson, (1662-1725) Vicar of Cranbrook] writes to Thomas Brett informing him that he has written to Mr. Collier in an attempt to convince him that Edward VI's book 'is very imperfect, or rather preposterous' in its ordering of the elements of the liturgy and suggesting a different ordering of the Intercessions, Consecration, Invocation, Institution, and Oblation.
The letter has been written on the verso of a printed page which is a half-title page for: Reasons for restoring some prayers and directions, as they stand in the Communion-Service of the first English reform'd liturgy(by Jeremy Collier, 4th edition, London: 1718).
