Manuscript text of lecture 'Pluralism, Compassion and Social Hope' given by F. R. Leavis at York, 1970. Written in Leavis' hand and signed by the author, on the reverse of photocopied pages from an unidentified edition of Jane Eyre, 36 numbered leaves.

Administrative / Biographical History

Frank Raymond (F.R.) Leavis was born in Cambridge in 1895. He read History and English at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and subsequently became a lecturer in the English Faculty there. He moved to Downing College, Cambridge, in 1931 and was elected Fellow in 1936. In 1965, following his retirement from Cambridge, he joined the recently established University of York as a visiting Professor of English, a position he held until 1976. His later writings are especially associated with York.
An influential literary critic, his publications included 'New Bearings in English Poetry' in 1932,'The Great Tradition' in 1948, and 'Nor Shall My Sword: Discourses on Pluralism, Compassion and Social Hope' in 1972.
He died in 1978.
