Administrative / Biographical History

Andrew Faulds was born in Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika), the son of Matthew Faulds, a Church of Scotland missionary. Educated in Scotland, he served in the Royal Air Force and the Fleet Air Arm during the Second World War. In 1945 he married Bunty Whitfield. Having just graduated from Glasgow University, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1948 and embarked upon his career as an actor. A member of the Labour Party, he first stood for Parliament in the 1963 Stratford by-election. Having stood for election again the following year, he was to be elected to the Smethwick constituency in 1966. Faulds was Labour Member of Parliament for this constituency until his retirement in 1997 (the constituency having been renamed Warley East in 1974). Faulds was an active MP and was noted for being 'fiercely anti-racist', a Europhile and pro-Palestinian.
