Administrative / Biographical History
William Etty was born on Feasegate in York in 1787, the son of Matthew Etty, a baker and confectioner, and Esther Calverly.
Etty studied at the Royal Academy in 1807. He later became a popular artist, most well known for his paintings of mythical and historical scenes, as well as for his paintings of nudes.
He established the York School of Design, later the York School of Art, in 1842.
Etty died in 1849 and was buried in St Olave's churchyard, York.
