Scope and Content

Two complete typescript drafts of the three act play 'Noddy in Toyland' written by Enid Blyton and first performed in 1955. Both typescripts bear manuscript annotations and revisions, and both include pages where revised text has been cut and pinned into position over old text. This cutting and pinning is more frequent in the first typescript, and, although the text of both drafts is largely identical, there are some small differences between the revisions and annotations in each typescript. This three act play was published as 'Enid Blyton's Book of Her Famous Play Noddy in Toyland' (Sampson Low, 1956).

The file also contains a partial typescript draft of a two act play, also titled 'Noddy in Toyland'. This partial draft is very different from the three act play, and would appear to be earlier in date. Although no date is given on the typescript, the title page states 'Scenery by Beek' [Harmsen van der Beek was the original illustrator of the Noddy books], so this typescript must pre-date Beek's death in 1953. It is unclear whether this play was ever finished, and it does not appear to have ever been performed on stage. An additional manuscript list in the file reads 'Noddy in Toyland: Play in 2 acts - music Noel Johnson; Noddy play proper - various copies; message from E.B.; songs and notes'. While the first two items on the list appear to refer to the contents of this file, the other items listed have not survived.

When purchased, the contents of this file were stored in a paper folder labelled 'Noddy play 1961'. This folder has been retained in the file, although the date appears to be misleading. The play 'Noddy in Toyland' was still being performed in 1961, although it is likely Blyton made slight changes to it each year.
