Macdonald Papers

Scope and Content

The collection includes:

papers of John Lockwood Kipling (1865-1911), being illustrations to Rudyard's early works, a notebook of c. 1891 and newspaper cuttings of his own journalism;

20 letters (some of them photocopies ) from his son Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) to his sister Alice Macdonald Fleming (1868-1948), her husband John M. Fleming and S. Healey; and

11 letters to his mother Alice Kipling (1837-1910) concerning her health.

Administrative / Biographical History

Alice Macdonald Fleming (1868-1948) was the only sister of Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), the author. She married Colonel John M. Fleming (1858-1942).

Custodial History

These papers were collected by Alice Macdonald Fleming, who passed them to Helen Mary Macdonald and Margaret Elizabeth Macdonald, relatives on her mother's side. The sisters donated the collection to the University of Sussex in 1987.
