Mediterranean Diary

Scope and Content

This autograph volume is entitled Diary Nov. 15th, 1880 - April 22nd, 1881 and chronicles the opening stages of a tour of the Eastern Mediterranean, including the author's rough costings for the project. In daily entries, which range from a handful of lines to a page in length, the unidentified author details his or her travels and activities.

The traveller's itinerary was:

November 1880: Gibraltar, Algiers

December 1880: Alexandria, Cairo

January 1881: a journey along the Nile, Luxor, Aboo Simbel, Phila

February 1881: Athens, Taormina (Sicily), Syracuse (Sicily), Catania (Sicily), Palermo (Sicily), Naples, Pompeii , Salermo, Amalfi

April 1881: Sorento, Naples, Rome, Orvieto, Florence

The tour was scheduled to continue in Italy until the author's return to England towards the end of July.
