• Letters and papers, 1909-70, including, letters to Mrs Rebecca M. Carlyle, 1909-28; letters to Margaret and Mary Carlyle, 1919-64; and letters from publishers about Carlyle's published works, 1955-65, with royalty statements, 1955-70
• Two household account books of Mrs Rebecca M. Carlyle, 1896-1908, 1914-18

Alexander James Carlyle (1861-1943) was a historian of political thought. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.
