The Burdett-Coutts collection consists mainly of:  

  • Papers of Sir Francis Burdett, 1644-1895 (predominantly 19th century)
  • Papers of Thomas Coutts, 1753-1842
  • Papers of M.W. Patterson, 1795-1938, relating to Sir Francis Burdett and his times, 1770-1844 (London, 1931)

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Francis Burdett, 5th baronet (1770-1844) was a politician. His father-in-law was Thomas Coutts (1735-1822), banker. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Custodial History

The papers belonged successively to Sir Francis's youngest daughter, Angela, Baroness Burdett-Coutts, her husband, W.L. Ashmead-Bartlett, and his nephew Seabury Ashmead-Bartlett (later Burdett-Coutts).
