Administrative / Biographical History

John O. Sykes, OBE, was born in 1892. In 1925 he became Master of Method and Vice-Principal of Makerere College, Uganda. At regular periods he was acting Principal of the College and, for a short time during 1936, he was also acting Deputy Director of Education. In April 1939 Sykes was appointed Deputy Director of Education and took up his post in August. In the same year he became Chairman of Kampala Township Authority and also Censor for the Colony. For nearly 4 years from 1941, Sykes was acting Director of Education; he returned to the post of Deputy Director in 1945 and retired in 1947.
