Papers, 20th century, comprisingTo Zanzibar and Back, a memoir by Helen L. Haylettof service in Zanzibar Protectorate, etc. from 1935 to 1961 (ref. MSS. Afr. s. 2223/1).

Helen L. Haylett was educated at Sale County High School before training at St. James's Secretarial College, London. She then worked as a shorthand typist with the Asiatic Petroleum Company Limited, rising after five years to the position of 3rd Secretary to the Area Manager for Scandinavia. In 1935 she left to take up the post of Office Assistant to the Secretariat, Zanzibar. She later worked as Secretary to the Governor, Dar-es-Salaam and was Chairman of the African branch of the YWCA, Mombasa until 1961.
