Records of the Nottingham and District Trades Union Council, 1883-2002

The collection comprises:

• Minute book of the Joint Committee of the United Trade Councils of Nottingham, 1883-1889, incorporating minutes of a special committee appointed to investigate unemployment in Nottingham, 1893 (Tr M 1).
• Minutes of Nottingham Trades Council, sometimes including newspaper cuttings regarding the activities of the council, 1890-1942, 1951 (Tr M 2-34).
• Correspondence and printed material relating to the Nottingham Trades Union Council and its activities, 1980-2002 (Tr C and Tr P).

The Nottingham Trades Union Council has its origins in the Joint Committee of the United TradeCouncils of Nottingham, formed in 1883. The committee provided a forum for the various trade unionsrepresenting workers' rights in Nottingham at the time. This involved petitioning Parliament andarbitrating with employers when necessary. In 1890, the Association of Organised Trades and theFederated Trades Council replaced the committee. It maintained a commitment to improving workers'education, wages and working conditions. It was later renamed Nottingham Trades Council and thenNottingham Trades Union Council. It is still in existence and its scope has widened to embrace avariety of socialist activities including the combat of racism and Fascism, and support for civilrights and environmental groups.

The collection has been divided by document type into three series. The minutes in Tr M have beenlisted and have been arranged chronologically. Arrangement and cataloguing of the printed materialand correspondence accruals in the collection has not yet been undertaken.

ACCESS: Access to catalogued series is generally open,although material less than 30 years old is normally restricted.

REPROGRAPHIC: Reprographic copies can be supplied for educational use and private study purposesonly, depending on access status and the condition of the documents.

The minutes in the collection came to The University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscriptsand Special Collections in October 1957 and June 1966. Further accruals comprising correspondenceand printed matter relating to the council and its activities have been acquired regularly since1980.
