The papers reflect Achard's activities as tutor to the 2nd Duke of Portland. The correspondence includes letters from his own family members, as well as from the 1st Duke and Duchess concerning their son's education. Included in a final section of miscellaneous papers is a detailed list of the collection of miniatures at Welbeck.Achard's correspondence with other academics and with military men throughout Europe is reflected in the Collection.

Administrative / Biographical History
John Achard was a Swiss gentleman and scholar from Lausanne. He was tutor to the 2nd Duke of Portland, and part of the Bentinck household for many years. He died in 1770 leaving the bulk of his estate to Margaret, Duchess of Portland.
Arrangement
The Collection is divided into two series, reflecting its arrangement on acquisition from Welbeck. The first consists of letters to John Achard, and the second series contains miscellaneous papers.

Custodial History
These papers constitute part of the Portland (Welbeck) Collection (Pw) and were received from the 7th Duke of Portland in the first deposit from Welbeck Abbey in 1949. By the Duke's express wish the family archives were divided between The University of Nottingham (political and family correspondence); Nottinghamshire Archives Office (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Northumberland estate papers); British Library (Harley family papers); Hampshire Record Office (papers relating to the Dukes' Hampshire estate) and the Bodleian Library (Civil War papers of Reverend John Nalson). The entire Portland archive from Welbeck was accepted by the state in lieu of estate duty in 1986.
