Scope and Content

The collection contains essays on educational themes, written by Harry Davies (PHD 1). Dating isusually only possible from internal evidence.

Titles include: 'Books and learning in the secondary school'; 'Conclusion'; 'The day grammarschool'; 'Education and equality'; 'The education of librarians'; 'Home and school'; 'Introduction';'A liberal education for the second half of the twentieth century'; 'Methods of examining'; 'Openingremarks at the last plenary session'; 'Raising the school leaving age and the Humanities'; 'Thesixth-form of the Future'; 'Slaughter of the innocents'; 'The training of teachers'; 'The trainingof teachers of physical education'. There is also a set of short instalments (see accompanyingcorrespondence with Edward Blishen) for a journal. The instalments are entitled 'A-levels'; 'CSEs';'Examinations'; 'O-levels'; 'Matriculation'; 'Subject examinations'; and 'Teacher control ofexams'.

Correspondence. 1964-1968 (PHD 2). Most of the correspondence relates to the commissioning andpublication of articles by Harry Davies.

Administrative / Biographical History

Harry Davies was born in Totmorden in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He graduated from CambridgeUniversity with a degree in History and became a teacher at Hertford Grammar School. He wasappointed headmaster at Northallerton Grammar School in 1943 and in 1947 he accepted the sameposition at High Pavement Grammar School, Nottingham. He joined the staff of the University ofNottingham in 1963 as director of the Institute of Education. As Professor of Education, he wasresponsible from 1965 until his retirement in 1972 for the college division of the University Schoolof Education. His book 'Culture and the Grammar School' was published in 1965.

Professor Davies was active in Nottingham life, as a Justice of the Peace, member of thePlayhouse Trust and a chairman of the Music Club.
