Research notes of Lt. Col. R.F.B. Hodgkinson concerning the guilds of St George and StMary in the church of St Peter in Nottingham, 1928-1939

Scope and Content

The collection contains a volume holding a manuscript translation by R.F.B. Hodgkinson of anaccount book for St Peter's Church in Nottingham for the period 1459-1648. The translation followsthe structure of the original volume, which is now in Nottinghamshire Archives. The principalcomponents of the volume are accounts for the guilds of St George (1459-1545/6) and St Mary(1515-1540/1) founded at the Church. Hodgkinson also transcribed churchwardens' accounts (1521-1648)for the church, which were recorded amongst the guild accounts. The collection includes a typescriptintroduction to the translation by Professor L.D.V. Owen, a few scraps of manuscript notes and aletter to Professor Owen written by 'A.C.W.' in 1929 with reference to additional informationdiscovered at the Public Record Office about the guild book.

The translation by Hodgkinson and introduction by Professor L.D.V. Owen were published afterHodgkinson's death in volume seven of the Record Series of the Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire(1939).

Administrative / Biographical History

Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Frank Byron Hodgkinson was educated at Rugby School. He lived inNewark, Nottinghamshire. He was a keen local historian and an active council member of the ThorotonSociety of Nottinghamshire. He died on 9 August 1928.

Religious guilds attached to parishes throughout England were founded under licence by the Crownand served primarily social and philanthropic purposes. The date of the foundation of the guilds ofSt Peter's is not clear. There are references to a guild at the church as early as 1379 and thefoundation of the Guild of St George is recorded as 1440. Hodgkinson's research covers the period1459-1546 for the guild of St George and 1515-1541 for the guild of St Mary.

Leonard V.D. Owen was Professor of History at University College Nottingham. His interestsincluded local history.
