Appointments to military rank of Matthew Tilford, 1855-1877

Scope and Content

The collection comprises five military appointments for Matthew Tilford covering the period 1855to 1877 and all relating to appointments in the 60th regiment of Foot. The ranks involved are:Ensign, Adjutant, Major, Captain, Lieutenant and Lieutenant Colonel. The last does not specify aregiment but rather refers to Tilford's appointment to 'Land Forces'. The appointments are printedforms with details inserted in manuscript.

Administrative / Biographical History

Matthew Tilford was appointed to the 60th Regiment of Foot as an Ensign in 1855. He rose throughthe ranks of the regiment and became Lieutenant Colonel in 1877. According to a wrapper containingthe appointments, Tilford was living in Wilford, Nottinghamshire in 1878.
