Volume containing manuscript lists of mayors and burgesses of Nottingham,1826

The volume lists mayors and burgesses in a number of distinct series. It begins with the Mayors,in chronological order, 1699-1833. The lists of Burgesses are given in alphabetical sequence,beginning with the Burgesses under 'A', from 1699-1826. A number of names have been added at a laterdate. In some of the lists, the occupation of the burgesses is also identified.

The identity of the compilers of the lists is unknown. A number of different hands are present,indicating that the lists were assembled over a considerable period of time. The purpose of thevolume is not clear. A pencil annotation, which indicates that it was at that time for sale, refersto a former owner as Alderman Howitt, presumably Alderman John Howitt, Mayor of Nottingham1874-1875. It may then have been purchased for the Mechanics Institution Reference Library inNottingham; it still bears the Institution's book label.

The collection has been divided by document type into series. Within these series, items havebeen arranged chronologically.
