Alice Bloemendahl: Theresienstadt eyewitness account

Scope and Content

This collection contains an eyewitness testimony relating to Terezin concentration camp by Alice Bloemendahl. This is the only surviving letter that she sent to friends in Hamburg whilst she was at Terezin. Bloemendahl describes the cultural, artistic and intellectual activities as well as improvements to the camp implemented by the Jewish inmates.

Administrative / Biographical History

Holocaust survivor Alice Bloemendahl was a teacher in Hamburg. She was deported to Terezin concentration camp in July 1942. Initially, she read literature in the sickroom of the barracks. She also gave lectures in French and English including modern art and literature. Bloemendahl survived the Holocaust and died soon after the Second World War.
