Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
An Executive Committee was established as a standing committee of the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1926. By June 1930 it had combined with another standing committee, the Finance and Establishment Committee, to form the Finance and Executive Committee (F & E), reporting to Council. The Committee met monthly and so provided a forum to deal with the issues discussed by Council on a more regular basis and performing on behalf of Council, matters of routine business. It is therefore very significant in terms of College governance and management, and remains so today. In 2002 it was renamed the Finance and Executive Group and comprised College Officers, representatives of Fellows and Members and key senior staff of the College. In 2005, its name reverted back to the Finance and Executive Committee and presently meets on a monthly basis, except August.
By 2008, the committee's executive remit was to: assist the Officers in developing a strategy for the College; nominate to Council membership of committees and chairmen; consider the remit and need for existing committees on a regular basis; establish and recommend to Council working parties, their remit and membership; nominate to Council Honorary Fellows, Fellows ad Eundem and Members without examination; monitor the number and impact on the College of associates and affiliates; approve awards for scholarships, prizes and fellowships; nominate those to be awarded eponymous lectures; nominate to Council representatives of the College to outside organisations.
It performed the following financial functions: approving annual revenue and capital budgets; receiving and considering monthly management accounts and other financial statements; reviewing year end out-turns, annual subscriptions, examination fees, registration fees and other charges to members and trainees; considering exceptional expenditure not included in the approved annual budget; receiving the minutes of the Investment and Advisory Panel.
The Committee also had a managerial role: noting changes in staff, staff structure and considering changes to the terms and conditions of employment; approving major contracts with suppliers and government agencies; receiving the minutes of the following committees:

As well as receiving recommendations from all College committees where these have a personnel or unbudgeted or significant financial impact.
