Papers of Kathleen Savidge, 1945-1977

Scope and Content

Papers relating to the nursing and midwifery career of Kathleen Savidge, consisting of a letter of acceptance onto the Register of the General Nursing Council (June 1945), her completed case book submitted to the Central Midwives Board in Liverpool (June 1947) with anonymous cases seen in a midwives clinic, possibly in Oldham, and a registration card for the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, together with a certificate of long service issued by Norwich Council (March 1974) and Honorary Membership certificate issued by the Royal College of Midwives (1977) and photocopy of her newspaper obituary. The collection also includes a portrait photograph of Kathleen Savidge in uniform (c.1945), several of her bathing newborn babies (1962-1963), and photographs of babies delivered by her, often sent as Christmas greetings (1962-1963).

Administrative / Biographical History

Kathleen Savidge was born in Hyde, Cheshire and trained as a nurse during the Second World War. she qualified as a nurse in June 1945, and, following her training as a midwife, was appointed to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in 1947. She remained in this post until her retirement in May 1975, and was a member of the Norfolk Branch of the Royal College of Midwives for over 22 years, receiving Honorary Membership of the RCM in 1977.
