Records of the Library Committee of the Royal College of Midwives

Scope and Content

This collection comprises minutes of the Library Committee of the Royal College of Midwives (formally known as the Midwives Institute) (1945-1954), relating to the management of the library, including the buying, lending and storage of books.

Administrative / Biographical History

In response to the urgent need to purchase additional books for the library at the headquarters of the Royal College of Midwives (formally known as the Midwives Institute), the first meeting of the Library Committee was called on 27 April 1945.

During subsequent meetings, which took place on a regular but ad hoc basis, the Library Committee also discussed the storage and disposal of old books as well as the rules and organisation of the library.

Before this the management of the library, including the buying and lending of books, had been the responsibility of the Executive Council and Club Committee.

The original order of material is retained, although where this is not possible the arrangement of files has been based on the functions and activities of the organisation as well as chronology, subject and the needs of users.
