Administrative / Biographical History
The Association, named after Henry Fawcett (Postmaster-General, 1880-4), was a union of postal sorting clerks and was established in 1890. The Women Sorters' Association and the Postal Bagmen's Association affiliated in 1908. In 1919 it was one of the unions which amalgamated to form the Union of Post Office Workers.

Custodial History
The Fawcett Association's papers were deposited by the Union of Post Office Workers / Union of Communication Workers. The initial deposit relating to this archive was made on 17 February 1977 and accruals are listed under the entry for the Union of Communication Workers (MSS.148/UCW). Further additions were transferred from the University Library, ref.41T in October 2002.
