Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Centre was established as a limited company in 1982 by the Birmingham Trades Union Council to provide additional resources to promote the interests of the union and labour movement, primarily in the Birmingham area. Its management committee was appointed by the Birmingham Trades Union Council executive. It received funding from West Midlands County Council and, following the dissolution of that body in 1986, from Birmingham City Council. Fom then until 1991 its printing and video-making activities were conducted by subsidiary companies under TURC management. In 1995 Birmingham City Council withdrew its grant because of concerns that TURC's relationship with the Birmingham TUC was too close.
