British Iron and Steel Consumers' Council (BRISCC) and its predecessor, the Iron and Steel Consumers' Council

The Iron and Steel Consumers' Council was set up as a statutory body in 1967 when the steel industry was nationalised and the British Steel Corporation was formed. When Britain joined the European Community in 1973 the government was required under EC rules on subsidies to cease funding the Council. But many of the steel-using industries still wanted a body to represent their interests, particularly to the government and the European Commission, both of which intervened extensively in the industry, and on the Consultative Committee of the European Coal and Steel Community. They therefore established the British Iron and Steel Consumers' Council as a body financed entirely by members' subscriptions. It held its first meeting on 1 March 1973 and was wound up on 31 July 1991.
