Papers of Harry Holliday Newham [d 1953], Methodist missionary, relating to his work in India and Africa; includes correspondence, diary and index notebooks, accounts journal, photographs, newspaper cuttings, verses, rhymes and limericks.

Harry Holliday Newham was born in Ollerton, Nottinghamshire. He entered the Methodist Ministry in 1899. He lived and worked in the following locations: Kolar Gold Field[s] (1899-1902); Hassan (1903-1908); England (1909-1910); Tumkur (1911-1916); Wellington and Bangalore (1917-1919); England (1919-1920); Tumkur (1920-1923); West Africa (1924-1930), where he became Chairman of the Sierr[a] Leone District; Bangalore; [Kanavese] (1931-1944), where he became Chairman of the Mysore District; Bangalore and Mysore (1944-1946), Supernumerary; Selly Oak, Birmingham, England (from 1946); He died 5th October, 1953. He was related to Wynnel E. M. Newham. In 1917 Newham was shipwrecked off the coast of Ceylon, and a letter documenting his experience is included in the papers.

Unknown deposit to the Selly Oak Colleges Central Library [later forming part of the Orchard Learning Resources Centre]. However, some material appears to have been in the possession of and/or deposited by the South Asia Church Aid Association (Incorporated), London.

Following the merger of the Selly Oak Colleges and the University of Birmingham in 1999 the custodial ownership of collections belonging to the Selly Oak Colleges and held at the Orchard Learning and Resource Centre (OLRC) was transferred to the University. These collections now form part of the University's Special Collections Department and are available for consultation at the Main Library on the University's Edgbaston Campus.

The collection includes 28 books, pamphlets, printed reports, letters and minutes, which will be catalogued separately with printed material.

Associated material may be found at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, in the archives of the Methodist Missionary Society (now the Methodist Church Overseas Division). The Orchard Learning Resources Centre and the University of Birmingham, Special Collections Department holds a rich collection of archives relating to missions, charities and other religious and ecclesiastical organisations and individuals.
