The correspondence relates to the search for the missing British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1845-1848 (leader Sir John Franklin) . The British Franklin Search Expedition, 1857-1859 (leader Francis Leopold McClintock) was the first to return with a written record from the missing expedition.
