Administrative / Biographical History
The correspondence includes a letter relating to the New South Wales Sealing Voyage (from Port Jackson), 1810 (leader Frederick Hasselburg). Sailing on Perseverance, owned by Campbell and Co. Hasselburg, discovered the island on 11 July 1810 during a return voyage to Campbell Island, and named it after the then governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie. After landing a sealing gang on Campbell Island, Hasselburg returned to Port Jackson in August for fresh supplies and provisions. Returning to Macquarie Island in October 1810, the vessel continued to Campbell Island where Hasselburg was drowned on 4 November 1810.
