Letter from Robert Gouger to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter Gouger writes of his regret at missing Owen when he called and notes enclosing an copy of an essay he has written to show that he has been busy.

In the essay Gouger lays down his ideas for setting up a society to afford relief to the pauper labouring classes, by means of systematic Colonisation. Gouger outlines his plan for setting up a fund to enable emigration of the poor to Canada, South Africa and Australasia which would reduce the population of Britain.
