Letter from John Finch to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

This manuscript letter is written on the rear of a printed copy of a Summary of Events at the first meeting of the Co-operative Congress, which was held in Manchester on the 26 and 27 of May 1831. The Summary contains details of the resolutions passed, names of individuals to be elected as Trustees (including Finch), the Laws for the Government of the North West of England United Co-operative Company, and an address by the Delegates which provides a comprehensive outline of the Delegates aims, including the establishment of "Wholesale Trading Companies".

In his letter Finch puts forwards his ideas for the publication of a weekly newspaper in London, which Owen indicted has thus far been impossible. Owen is advised to contact Lady Byron, described here as a "warm friend of cooperation", and try to make some arrangements as her Ladyship has a background in similar ventures.

Discussion turns to the imminent start of a business concern [Co-operative Society] in Liverpool, with Finch writing that the Subcommittee of the Purchasing Agency are to shortly meet in preparation for the start of this business.

Finch states he will try to get Owen a place to lecture as it "would do a great deal of good in Liverpool".
